The Super-Fast Thermapen from ThermoWorks has been a favorite among restaurant chains, health inspectors and quality managers worldwide. Hundreds of thousands are in use. The clever fold-away probe and the simple pocket design replace more costly and bulky handheld thermometers while using the same professional thermocouple technology. This new generation Thermapen introduces a robust, splash-proof design with molded-in seals to protect the thermometer from wet hands and kitchen splashes. SPEED & ACCURACY Even more accurate than before and slightly faster! Our proprietary circuit yields accuracies better than ±0.7¡F. That includes all errors! (many competitors don't include the probe error in their spec.) Each unit comes with a NIST-Traceable certificate of calibration showing test results for the individual thermometer. Resolution is now 0.1¡ over the full range. Improvements in the probe technology now yield a blazing fast speed of 3 seconds to a full temperature reading. NO CABLES! The components most likely to fail in a commercial thermometer are the cable and its connector. Also, the typical handheld meter and probe combination requires two hands. What do you do with the cable when you're through with it? The competition want you to wrap it around the meter, which is time consuming and a natural trap for grime and bacteria! The one-handed Thermapen eliminates frayed cables, snags, germ traps and wasted time while freeing your second hand. SIMPLE OPERATION Just open the probe and the Thermapen comes on. One word for this thermometer - awesome! Pull out the needle, it turns on. Insert in food, obtain an almost instantaneous reading. Okay, it doesn't stop me from overcooking things on the charcoal from inattention or from not spreading the coals evenly, but hey, it never promised to do those things :- It will give an accurate reading of the temperature of what's on the grill, and if I'm lucky enough to check it in time, I can get a perfectly cooked steak (or one I can put elsewhere on the grill to either cook quicker or slower whatever the case may be.... This is an investment grade piece of kitchen equipment, and the people that eat my grilling are happy that we invested in it. 'Nuff said. Other than I'm very happy I ditched my cheap thermometer once this arrived.

Over the past 2 years I have bought 5 food thermometers and all have been as bad as one another. Thank goodness I found this Thermapen. It does exactly what it says it will do, speedy accurate readings every time. It also feels well built so I'm hoping to have many years or trouble free service out of it too.


Splash-Proof Super-Fast Thermapen (Purple) Instant Read Thermometer, Perfect for Barbecue, Home and Professional Cooking Review by SDR

After a few too many steaks & chicken just slightly under- or over-done, I invested in this thermometer. I say "invested" because it's fairly expensive. Turns out that it's worth it. It is very sturdy, and the design is smart (although perhaps a little difficult to use if you hold it left-handed). It has three advantages compared to many other thermometers.

1. It's very thin - no more massive holes in the chicken breast.

2. The part that registers the temperature is at the very tip of the probe (I think it's only about an eighth of an inch) and so you read the temperature very "locally" - exactly where you've placed the tip. The tiny tip is especially useful if you're grilling a thin piece of meat - you can get the temperature right in the center of the meat, which would be impossible with some of the chunky big thermometers.

3. It reads within 2-3 seconds, then stabilizes. So, it means you have the lid of the BBQ open for a shorter time. In fact, you can take several reads at different places (useful when cooking larger things, like whole chicken or turkey) without the BBQ cooling down too much.

Highly recommended.
